Ryerson Residence Appreciation Banquet

Ryerson Student Housing Services held their annual Residence Appreciation Banquet on March 26^th, 2011 to recognize and thank all of the student leaders who contribute to residence at Ryerson. Award winners include:

Partner of the year awards are presented to individuals that each team created a strong partnership and bound with, and ensuring the team had achieved success in their position.

Academic Link Partner of the Year: Jeff Perea, Get Clear Program

Residence Advisor Partner of the Year: Shauna Bookal, Ryerson Athletics and Recreation

Residence Council Partner of the Year: Sean Carson, RSU

Residence Service Desk Partner of the Year: Emmanuel Tesoro, Black and McDonald Maintenance

Team Player of the year awards are presented to individuals on each team who were identified as most exemplifying team spirit and going over and beyond their responsibilities to contribute to the team.

Listed below are this year’s individual awards with recipients;

Ted Brock Award recognizes an upper-year O’Keefe House residence who has made great contributions to the Housing during their time there, the recipient this year was Mhairi Treharne.

Julia Louie- Memorial Award is presented annually to a Residence Student Leader who has demonstrated exceptional devotion and exemplifies a position attitude, the recipient this year was Erika Kronwald-Debruyn.

Marion Creery Residence & Campus Life Award is presented to a residence student leader that has displayed a passion, energy and commitment to connect the residence community to campus life. The recipient this year was Maya Mboup.

Brian Muscat First Year Student Leader Award is presented to a new leader who has demonstrated strong leadership, an excellent ability to connect with their peers and has gone above and beyond their duties to improve the residence community or the student experience. The recipient this year was Alex McKaig & Danielle Brogan

Liza Nassim Returning Student Leader of the Year Award is presented to a residence student leader who has lead by example, been a excellent role model to other student leaders and has made a lasting contribution to residence and campus life at Ryerson. The recipient this year was Shiloh Lazar.

OVPS student leadership awards announced

Student Housing leaders acknowledged among Ryerson’s top student leaders

Toronto, ON, March 18, 2011: The office of Vice Provost Students (OVPS) announced their leadership award winners today acknowledging top student leaders across campus in departments contained within the OVPS. The work of Student Housing Services (SHS) student leaders was well acknowledged with 4 leaders receiving top awards at the reception.

Marion Creery Student Leadership Award

This award is named in honour of Marion Creery who from 1988 to 2008 served as the Director of Student Services. It is presented annually to two Ryerson students whose leadership demonstrates passion, creativity, and perseverance in making Ryerson a better place for students to learn and realize their potential.

Maya Mboup was awarded this honour. Maya is deeply committed to helping students develop their academic potential in her work as an Academic Link. In addition, in her work as a Community Leader, Maya has acted as a mentor and facilitator to other leaders in residence. Maya was crowned Miss AfriCanada this year, lead her TRSM debate team to a top finish in a national competition, served on the executive of AEISIC Ryerson, and manages Initiatives A+- a non-profit youth mentoring program she began in her first year at Ryerson. Maya’s extensive leadership has impacted communities within residence, at Ryerson, across Canada, and globally.

Community Development Award

The Community Development Award recognizes student leaders that have helped to build a sense of community through their caring attitude, outstanding interpersonal skills and their ability to connect people to each other and to their community.

Sarah Stockdale was an award winner in this category. Sarah has acted as the Graduate Advisor- Leadership in SHS while completing her Masters in Professional Communication. Sarah has contributed to the residence community by managing the residence hero program, helping to advise the residence council, and introducing a brand new Student Leadership Program (SLP) to residence. The SLP has created numerous ways for first year students to get involved, develop their leadership skills, and create community within residence.

Student Leadership Award

This award recognizes and celebrates the contribution that Ryerson student leaders have made outside the classroom. Recipients of this award will have shown a high level of commitment, lead by example, shown initiative and made a strong contribution to their community.

Lauren Akbar and Kyra Whale were award recipients in this category. Lauren has acted as Residence Advisor and Community Leader within the residence community. Her strong advising skills, passion for people, and commitment to helping any student she comes into contact with in any way she can made her very deserving of this award. As a community leader in Pitman Hall Lauren has mentored and facilitated several residence student leaders and was recently selected in her program of Child and Youth studies to represent Ryerson during an experiential service learning project examining Aboriginal youth issues in April.

Kyra Whale has served for all of her years at Ryerson as a leader on the Ryerson Residence Council. As a floor representative, floor president, Vice-President Events and this year as President, Kyra has lead the council in planning events and building community within residence. Kyra has greatly influenced the development of the council and its’ members and also has a passion for planning events that benefit communities beyond Ryerson including Free the Children.

All residence buildings are open today as originally planned. We officially reopen at 12-noon for students to move back in.

Student Housing Services Crisis Message

In a community of 850 students, it is probable that an emergency or crisis situation may arise over the span of our 8 month academic year. Student Housing Services has several systems in place to ensure we are providing highly developed support to our students during these times. This includes:

· Emergency SHS manager on call 24 hours/day, 7 days a week

· Close connections to campus partners including: The Centre for Student Development and Counselling, Security Services, Health Centre, Campus Planning (?) etc etc.

· Extensive training for full time and part time student staff in relevant student issues including mental health, sexual assault, discrimination and harassment etc.

· A connection to larger campus emergency protocol and response initiatives

· Connections to professional housing networks to establish and enact best industry practices

Study Space in Residence

With the last week of classes and exam fast approaching, we have opened up Pitman Hall 110- as a available study space for residents and guests. This space will be open 24/7 and is located beside the mailboxes in Pitman Hall.

Residents are also welcome to sign out Pitman Hall 200/205 as study space if available, please check in the Student Housing Office (Pitman Hall 100) to book a time out.

Extension Request-Due Fri Nov 26th

Don't forget all students must vacate their rooms for the Winter Break by 9pm on the date of their last exam.

If for some reason, you require to stay later than your last exam date, please head down to the Student Housing Services office (Pitman Hall-rm 100) to fill out a request.

Please note: the last possible date you can stay in residence until is Dec. 18 @ Noon.

Movember challenge brings prostate cancer awareness

Moustaches are in vogue this month at Ryerson.

All students in residence are being encouraged to either join or support the Ryerson Residence Grows Luxury team in honour of Movember. The month-long contest challenges men to grow a moustache and both men and women to raise money for prostate cancer.

Ryerson Residence Alumni

Ryerson Ram Matt Buie won the 'B' Final at the 2010 FISU World University rowing championships in Hungary, Aug. 13-15. Buie represented Team Canada in the men's pair category with teammate Eric Tremblay, University of Victoria. This is the first international competition Buie has competed in as a member of Team Canada. The pair recorded a time of 6:46.52 over a two-kilometre course.

New laundry machines in all 3 buildings!

We are happy and excited to announce that over the summer we tendered and negotiated a contract with a laundry equipment provider for all 3 Residence buildings at Ryerson University. The old equipment was quite old and dated and it was time for it to be replaced.
We knew the timeline would be quite tight to tender the new contract and get the equipment installed in time for move-in day. Unfortunately due to delays outside of our control the new equipment could not be installed prior to August 29, 2010.
However, the new equipment will be installed this coming week (schedule below). You may experience some service disruptions while the installation takes place and the old machines are removed to make room for the new machines to arrive.
Connected to the installation of these new machines is a new OneCard-based payment system. As you know you were billed a laundry fee over the summer which will be placed on your Ryerson OneCard. This OneCard based system could not be installed until a Laundry contractor was chosen. This OneCard-based system will be installed mid-September.
Until that time the laundry equipment will be available free of charge. We ask that you respect the machines and the environment during that time by using the washers and dryers responsibly.

Rez Serves

Rez Serves allows you to spend a half day volunteering with a local organization and to make connections with community members and other Ryerson Residence students and make a difference in the Toronto Community.

All those who choose to participate in Rez Serves will be required to attend a volunteer training workshop on Wednesday, March 10th from 7-9 pm in Pitman 200.

Please choose one of the following opportunities to volunteer:

1. Sunday March 21st, 2010 from 1-4 pm
a) The Good Shepherd Centre: provides food, shelter and clothing for people in need. While the Centre continues to provide the basic necessities of life, it has also grown to incorporate programs that address the more serious causes of homelessness such as addictions, health care and housing.

Duties may include: serving meals, laundry, bed-making, connecting with sheltered users.

b) Young Street Mission: works to meet the needs of people living in poverty in our city through our diverse programs, we make a positive difference in the lives of families, seniors, socially isolated adults, homeless street youth and children. Services include a food bank and meal programs, employment and computer training, school readiness programs, counseling, daycare and a post-secondary Scholarship fund.

2. Friday March 26th, 2010 from 3-7 pm
Toronto Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club: works with young people and their families, enabling them to develop the life skills, knowledge and values essential to becoming healthy contributing individuals.

The Gerrard K After School Program runs each weekday from 3:30 to 7 pm. This structured After School program for six to thirteen year olds introduce members to variety of activities and programs that promote physical, creative, educational and social development through play.
